About Time is a sweet romantic comedy that jumps around a bit, but that is purposeful. The story is about time travel after all. The lovely Rachael McAdams plays Mary, the object of Tim's (Domhnall Gleeson) affections. Gleeson, from the Harry Potter films, does a fine job acting but he doesn't win Cindy and I over in the heartthrob category. Sorry, I can't help it. He is no Ryan Gosling.
Tim has a lovely family life living in coastal England. On his 21st birthday, his father (Bill Nighy) springs on him that the men in the family can time travel...but with some perimeters that have to be followed. Initially disbelieving such a wild story, Tim tests it out and his dad was spot on. It worked! So now what? A little nerdy, Tim has not been lucky in love so to speak, but his new aspect in life will definitely add some zing and maybe even aid him now and then. Jump ahead a few years, living in London as a new attorney, he goes to some bizarre group blind date and this is where he first encounters Mary. But after he messes with time travel to aid his roommate, she is erased from his life. Tim's mission is to find her again no matter how long it takes. Tim has to win her over the old fashioned way. This is not the only hurdle that he must overcome, as he has to come to his troubled sister's aid time and time again. Deciding the fate of people and changing lives is not as easy as it seems, Tim discovers. A Kleenex or two is needed for the end, but what would a love twist be without the sorrow kicker thrown in? About Time is not quite the delight I was hoping for, but it is likeable and worth seeing.
